Founded in the 13th
century, Sukhothai
(literally the Dawn of Happiness) was the first
truly independent Thai Kingdom, enjoying a golden age
under King Ramkhamhaeng, who is credited with creating
the Thai alphabet. The superb temples and monuments of
this great city are now a
UNESCO
World Heritage Site.
Lampang is famous
for its horse-drawn carriages and many wooden buildings.
There is a long history of human settlements on the
Wang River
basin, some of which date
back more than 1,000 years. The area is rich in archaeological
remains, reflecting the many ancient civilisations of
Hariphunchai, Lanna and
Burma. |
